Measure diameter with calipers at multiple points; reduction >5% from original or swelling from water absorption shows core loss. Weigh a section: weight loss ≥10% reveals internal abrasion or chemical decay. Record values against spec.
Load and Environmental Check
Apply gradual load via winch not exceeding 50% of Ship Design MBL (WLL for synthetics), monitoring excess stretch or non-recovery. Professional proof tests every six months help detect invisible fatigue. Inspect under chafing gear for hidden abrasion and embedded sand or salt acting as internal grinders.
Retirement Criteria for Worn Tails
MEG4 advises retiring when residual strength reaches 75% of Ship Design MBL, currently verified by destructive test or historical data. Practical retirement triggers include: cross-section strand break >25%, diameter drop >5%, melt/hardening from heat >20% yarn affect, multiple splices, or overload break.
